The day had begun like every other, apart from the fact that Richard and Kahlan had run through a invisible magical barrier before Zedd was able to warn them. As they came back out of the glistening red wall that had formed instantly around them, Richard and Kahlan were transformed into six-year-old children. Giggling and dancing around like chipmunks gone wild. Zedd assumed that he could undo the spell – but needed to find some ingredients first. Cara would stay with Kahlan and Richard and wait. So Zedd had gone off to find what he needed.
As night fell, Cara found herself seated next to the fire and waited impatiently for Zedd’s return. Cara was sure, if he had found a tavern along his path, she would be stuck with the children forever and all hope of ever changing Kahlan and Richard back would be lost. She could already imagine Zedd ordering everything edible the tavern had to offer.
The cracking sound of branch breaking brought her out of her musings. She casted a glance to the still sleeping children, but saw nothing suspicious.
Another sound, closer.
She got up from the wooden log and her fingers closed instinctively around her agiels. She silently made her way through the woods, all time having the children within her range of vision.
A blur of blonde hair appeared before her, as a figure stepped out behind a tree with its back to Cara. Cara did not hesitate for long and threw herself against it, using the entirety of her weight to tackle the figure to the ground.
"Arghhgh..." was the muffled reply, before it was soon stifled by the soft forest soil. Cara sat up and turned the figure around to face her.
"Hah! You again!" Cara exclaimed, her brows shot up in surprise. "You are harder to kill than the Keeper!" She got up.
Denna played with a strand of her wavy tresses and a smug smile settled on her lips. "Well..." She extracted the remaining leaves from her clothes, "I was praised for other things, but I will take it," then patted Cara's shoulder in a somewhat awkward gesture of gratefulness."
"Follow me," Cara ordered, "but be silent!" She headed back to the camp and came to halt in front of the snuggling children.
"If you don't want me to kill you again, you will assist me." Cara whispered while her hand wandered provocatively to her agiel.
Denna's eyes narrowed as she regarded Cara suspiciously, "with what?" She whispered back.
Cara pointed wordlessly to the sleeping children on the forest ground.
Denna leaned slowly down to inspect the objects further, but cautiously kept safe distance.
"What is it?" she asked and looked back at Cara.
Cara's expression turned deadly serious, "children."
"Ewww," Denna exclaimed with shocked widened eyes.
“Exactly,” Cara stated matter of factly. She was relieved, that Denna shared her notions. No matter how close she had grown with the others, only Mord'Sith could truly understand each other.
"What is it?" asked a third voice from behind them. The two Mord'Sith turned on her heels.
"Sorceress!" Both hissed simultaneously through clenched teeth. After a moment, Cara stopped hissing, Denna continued menacingly.
"You can help them!" Cara said, "undo the spell and transform Richard and Kahlan back to their older selves!" She commanded.
"Despite my otherwise caring nature…" Nicci answered sarcastically, "I can't." She pulled the collar down and revealed the in the reflection of the firelight shining Rada'Han around her neck. "Darken Rahl's present for my everlasting loyalty," she added dryly.
"So, you're defenseless", Cara noted with a grin on her lips.
"I still have my hands to strangle you, Mord'Sith", Nicci replied while making strangling motions with her hands.
Denna stepped closer to the sorceress. "And such shapely and strong fingers," she admired and took Nicci's hands in her own.
"And very flexible…" Nicci added looking pointedly at Denna.
"I see,"Denna smiled smugly, while her fingertips continued to stroke over the length of Nicci's fingers. Denna leaned close to the sorceress ear and whispered, "and so long"
"Oh boy!" Cara interrupted, "please stop before I have vomit." She rolled her eyes at the two and walked to the fire, then sat down on the log again.
"Where is the wizard?" She asked desperately rather to herself.
"I am already here!" Came the familiar voice out of nothing and Zedd stepped out of the forest. "And I found everything I need!" He exclaimed solemnly, then took a bite from the apple in his hand.
"Thank the spirits!" Cara cursed under her breath. Her gaze wandered back to the still sleeping children and the place where Nicci and Denna had stood only moments ago.
The sorceress was gone. As was Denna.
