As for Denna's first time, you really should read WFR :( Or I can just spoil it for you if you want... ;)
I agree that she has feelings underneath, too. And you're definitely right, she shows them even more than Cara in a lot of cases. But I think she is probably especially good at suppressing her feelings and being cruel when it comes to the other Mord-Sith who are under her in the hierarchy, since her survival and place in the ranks depends on it. So I think she might find it easier to be cruel to Cara than someone like Richard -- sort of like 'well this was done to me, so now I'm going to do it to you. you can take it.' I definitely think all of that is mixed with real feelings, it's just that everything is all dark and twisty. Like I could imagine that Denna did what she did here because she truly cared about Cara, and was feeling merciful, but she justified it to herself by telling herself she was only doing it so that she could control Cara later. Or something like that. I am obviously highly invested in Denna having feelings for Cara, though, and desperate for it so maybe I'm biased :P
