Another quiet year passes before they eventually see each other again.
'Before winter comes', Kahlan had whispered as she'd hold her close for the last time; after that, seasons flew by like swirling leaves in the wind.
Cara can tell from the look on her face now, the unshed tears in her clear blue eyes, that she has missed her as much as she has herself.
Dahlia wore the same expression once too, guarded no less, but underneath everything hard and raw - still there.
Either Richard or Zedd would come for a visit now and then and Cara can't pretend that she'd even minded a single one.
For most of the time over the years, she isn't sure if she'll travel to Aydindril ever again.
Gone are her sisters, gone is Darken Rahl and with him the era of the Mord'Sith.
Her enemies have become friends; it has taken a while, but with the passing of time old grudges fade away like flowers on a vast, waterless plain.
It's been ten years since they've defeated the Keeper and yet Cara remembers everything as if it had been only yesterday.
Journeys are long over, as are times for unspoken words of love or acts of passion.
Kahlan hasn't met her eyes since entering the cottage, but Cara can't seem to tear her eyes away, afraid that the woman in front of her will vanish if she'll blink only once.
Longing, it leaves her heart burning inside, it hurts - it has never felt better.
Minutes pass without notice, while silently white flakes of snow are blanketing the outer world.
Neither of them moves, waiting for the fragile moment to shatter, for the reality to break into pieces.
Once upon a time neither of them was the last of their kind; once upon a time they've been enemies, friends, lovers.
Perception of reality starts to shift and when Cara's fingers lift her chin and green eyes meet blue one's, the world around them ceases to exist.
Quests are over.
Regret is a sin of the past.
She is frightened to wake up from a dream; she wasn't afraid in long time.
Trembling hands reach out, pulling her into an embrace Cara didn't know she was longing for, making it real.
'.. us,' Kahlan whispers against her cheek, her skin begins to tingle, "I missed us."
Various moments of their past run through her mind, closing the void with thoughts of a future.
When the boundary to Hartland falls, Richard returns home, there is no blame, no hurt feelings, but a friendship.
EXcept for ten years in silence, Cara knows it had to happen this way.
Years pass by like minutes now and for the first time in ages - it feels right.
Zest for life has returned, and for a moment that feels like a lifetime, when Cara studies a sleeping Kahlan lying right next to her, she finally returns home too.
